According to Hontiveros, countrywide condominiums are being “repurposed” to house these fraud operations. She claims that, in addition to Filipino migrant laborers who were previously reported to have been trafficked to other Southeast Asian countries, nationals from other countries are being trafficked to the Philippines for this purpose.

Hontiveros has previously raised concerns about human trafficking in the Philippines. In the past, she has exposed reports of Filipino laborers being trafficked abroad for employment. However, authorities are alarmed by the recent assertion that the country also hosts its own hubs for fraud.

Globally, the use of cryptocurrencies in fraud has become a developing concern.
