The bill, known as the Safe and Secure Innovation for Frontier Artificial Intelligence Models Act (SB 1047), has drawn attention nationwide as it moves to the desk of Governor Gavin Newsom for his signature.

Critics Fear Impact on Innovation

However, the bill has faced significant opposition from various quarters, including prominent national figures. Democratic Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi of California described the bill as “well-intentioned but ill-informed,” reflecting concerns that strict regulations might stifle innovation in a rapidly evolving field.

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, also criticized the bill, arguing for national regulations instead of state-specific rules, which they believe could create a “chaotic patchwork” of laws across the United States.

Governor Gavin Newsom has until September 30 to either sign the bill into law or veto it. His position on the bill remains unclear, leaving the future of AI regulation in California hanging in the balance.
