Philippine Government Empowers Youth with Blockchain and NFT Education

In a push to prepare the next generation for the digital future, the Department of Science and Technology-Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI) of the Philippines introduced young Filipinos to the world of blockchain, cryptocurrencies, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). This initiative aims to equip students with hands-on knowledge of emerging technologies and their real-world applications.

Inspiring Innovation Through Blockchain

During a technology forum held on September 20, DOST-ASTI invited students to explore the power of blockchain. Roxanne S. Aviñante, a senior science research specialist from the agency, emphasized the growing job demand in blockchain technology. The event encouraged students to see how blockchain can be a driving force for innovation in fields such as science, technology, and sustainability.

Marc Jerome T. Tulali, another DOST-ASTI specialist, took the students through practical uses of blockchain and NFTs, highlighting how these technologies can be applied in everyday life. From secure voting systems to storing information that cannot be altered, the potential for blockchain goes far beyond cryptocurrencies.

Tulali also shared details about the Philippines’ efforts in building a blockchain-based system for intellectual property management called SIERRA (Self-Sovereign Identity Empowerment: Reinventing Rights and Attributes). This project demonstrates the government’s commitment to exploring innovative digital solutions.

Blockchain Across Industries

The forum introduced students to blockchain’s impact on various industries, including entertainment, healthcare, government, and even the central bank’s exploration of digital currencies. It showcased how blockchain can improve business operations, protect identities, and enhance the financial ecosystem.

In addition to empowering youth, the Philippines is exploring blockchain on a national level. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) recently launched controlled trials for a national stablecoin, PHPC, which is pegged to the Philippine peso. The aim is to test how this stablecoin can enhance digital asset trading and improve remittance services, an area in which the Philippines ranks among the top four countries globally.

Preparing the Youth for a Blockchain-Powered Future

Through events like the DOST-ASTI forum, the Philippines is positioning itself as a leader in blockchain education. By introducing students to these technologies, the government aims to foster a culture of innovation and equip the next generation with the skills they need to thrive in a blockchain-powered future.
