Axie Infinity’s Discord Compromised
Recently, Axie Infinity players discovered that the game’s official Discord chatbot had been compromised by hackers. The hackers used the Discord bot to spread spam messages to thousands of players, including shared images of pornographic content.
MEE6 is one of the most popular discord bots in the world with many uses ranging from simple chatbots to automated roles that grant users certain privileges on Discord servers. It’s one of the most trusted bots within crypto communities and has been used by many projects to automate their servers and accounts. Players were shocked because MEE6 was fairly secure since it ran on a secured Discord channel and the hacker needed to gain access to it through multiple levels of authentication.
Axie Developers Deny Hacking Occured
The developers of MEE6 are denying that it was hacked at all, claiming they have verified with their engineers and didn’t notice any unusual activity.
It is believed that the hackers targeted the admin accounts first and then got access to other admin accounts using MEE6. This allowed them to send out webhook messages while effectively hiding the compromised administrator accounts.
The Discord Bot compromise happened only a month after Axie Infinity’s Ronin Bridge was hacked, resulting in a loss of over $600 million worth of crypto assets. These breaches have caused the community to cast doubt on the security of the game. The daily active user count of Axie Infinity dropped from 2.7M peak users down to less than a million on 9th May 2022.
