Ethereum Set to Outperform Bitcoin After ETF Launch, Says K33 Research
Ethereum is poised to outshine Bitcoin following the launch of U.S.-based spot Ether exchange-traded funds (ETFs), according to analysts at K33 Research. This development could significantly impact the cryptocurrency market dynamics in the coming weeks.
The ETF Impact
The introduction of spot Ether ETFs, expected as soon as July 8, is seen as a major positive for Ethereum (ETH). These ETFs are anticipated to drive significant inflows into Ether, potentially boosting its price. In contrast, Bitcoin (BTC) might face downward pressure due to the repayment of $8.5 billion to creditors of the defunct exchange Mt. Gox.
Over the past year, Ethereum has underperformed compared to Bitcoin. Bitcoin has benefited from over $14 billion in inflows into its spot ETFs in 2024, leading to market-leading gains. However, K33 analysts Vetle Lunde and David Zimmerman believe that the upcoming Ether ETFs could change this trend.
Analyst Insights
Lunde and Zimmerman predict that Ethereum’s price might initially dip following the ETF launch but expect it to recover as inflows to the spot funds begin to support its value. Lunde highlighted the potential for ETFs to be a catalyst for Ethereum’s relative strength throughout the summer.
Despite their optimism, the analysts noted that the market remains skeptical. Ether futures are trading at a relative discount to Bitcoin futures, and the ETH/BTC exchange rate is currently 1 ETH to 0.055 BTC. This indicates a lack of immediate bullish sentiment towards Ethereum.
Historical Performance and Future Outlook
For the past year, the value of ETH compared to BTC has been declining, hitting a low of 0.045 in May. However, the approval of Ether ETFs by the SEC has recently reversed this trend, with the ETH/BTC rate rising to 0.055. This shift suggests a renewed interest in Ethereum as traders leverage their positions ahead of the ETF launch.
While Ethereum has struggled against Bitcoin in recent months, the upcoming launch of spot Ether ETFs offers a promising outlook. K33 Research analysts remain bullish on Ethereum, expecting substantial inflows to drive its price higher, potentially outperforming Bitcoin in the near future.
