PISAY Launches Blockchain Platform for Students with Crypto Technology

The Philippine Science High School (PSHS), also known as Pisay, has introduced a new blockchain-based system called Pisay-DigiCert. This digital platform aims to securely manage and share student records, using the same technology behind cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin.

The new system is designed to make the process of requesting and sharing student records faster and more convenient. Dr. Joel Bautista, the project leader, explained that students and parents will no longer need to visit the school to request documents. Instead, the records can be easily accessed online.

Ensuring the Authenticity of Records

One of the key benefits of Pisay-DigiCert is its ability to verify the authenticity of student records. Universities or employers can simply upload a file to the system to confirm whether a student’s documents are genuine.

“It’s going to save time and reduce the hassle of physically going to school just to request records,” said Bautista. “It also cuts down on the need for physical storage of documents.”

“For example, if another university needs to check whether a student’s records are valid, they can do so through DigiCert,” Bautista explained.

Benefits During Emergencies

The platform also provides a backup solution in cases of emergencies, such as natural disasters, where it may be difficult to physically visit the school to obtain important documents.

“If there’s a calamity and students can’t come to school to request records, the online system will be a helpful alternative,” Bautista added.

Blockchain Beyond Cryptocurrency

This project is part of a larger blockchain initiative under the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) Human Resource and Institution Development Division (HRIDD). Dr. Ruby Raterta, the head of HRIDD, emphasized that blockchain technology has uses far beyond cryptocurrencies.

“We want to show that blockchain technology can be applied in many fields, not just in cryptocurrency, but also in research and development,” Raterta said.

The Pisay-DigiCert system is expected to undergo testing by the end of this year or in 2025. If successful, it could set a trend for other government agencies and schools to follow, ensuring a more reliable and accessible way of managing records.
