A Hong Kong research team has unveiled intelligent textiles, a color-shifting fabric that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize the apparel industry, in a ground-breaking marriage of technology and fashion. The cutting-edge fabric, on display at Milan Fashion Week, has a microscopic camera integrated into it for color-changing capabilities, creating an immersive and dynamic fashion experience.

The fabric, created by the Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence in Design (AiDLab) in Hong Kong, blends yarn with Polymeric Optical Fibres (POF), which are frequently utilized in the automotive and medical industries. During Milan Fashion Week, models wore clothing and purses made of this shimmering material, demonstrating how well it changed color from vivid blue to orange, green, and deep purple.

The Magic is in the Technology: Computer Vision and Deep Learning

The goal of the UK’s Royal College of Art (RCA) and Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) research project, AiDLab, is to combine AI with design. Using deep learning and computer vision, the color-changing material trains artificial intelligence to decipher photos. AI algorithms driving an embedded camera provide a variety of colored illuminations that may be adjusted by remote control, mobile devices, or hand and body gestures.

Gestures can be used by users to control the fabric’s color changes. For instance, a thumbs-up causes the fabric to turn deep blue, a finger heart motion causes it to turn pink, and an ‘OK’ sign causes it to turn jewel-toned green. The most recent innovation in the fabric lets users project colors from phone pictures onto the material to give it a unique look.

Beyond Style: Rehabilitative and Ecological Uses

One of the development team members, Professor Jeanne Tan, sees wider uses outside the fashion sector. The multisensory stimulation capabilities of the technology may help those with dementia or learning disabilities. Furthermore, the sustainability advantages of the fabric can lessen waste from apparel, encouraging a more environmentally responsible way to consume fashion.
