Schools Implement AI for Weapons Detection, but Effectiveness Sparks Debate
Both optimism and concern surround the use of artificial intelligence (AI) systems in schools to identify weapons. Concerns have been raised over the usefulness and efficacy of the technology due to recent events in certain educational institutions.
Initially, officials in the Utica City School District in New York spent $3.7 million on artificial intelligence (AI) technologies intended to improve school safety by identifying weapons. They did, however, rethink their choice after a year. The AI systems created by Evolv Technology did not produce the desired outcomes.
Evolv scanners are still in use at the district’s elementary and middle schools. However, they went back to using “airport-style” metal detectors and bag scanners for high school security. Although it takes longer for children to go through these procedures, officials are more confident in their capacity to identify weapons, including pepper spray and knives.
Moreover, a firearm was not picked up by the Utica AI systems. An employee at a different school related an event in which a parent-police officer passed through one of the scanners without being detected while carrying his service weapon.
Atlanta Schools’ AI Scanner Experience
This year, Atlanta schools installed Evolv scanners at several building gates, especially those where a lot of bus passengers arrive at once. At additional access locations, these AI scanners were used in addition to conventional metal detectors. Applin claims that by the same time last school year, the district had taken 30 weapons away from children; thus far, this year, they had only taken possession of seven.
There is now a discussion regarding the overall effectiveness of AI weapons detection systems in schools due to the inconsistent results. Proponents of AI technology contend that it can expedite admission processes and increase security, but detractors point to cases in which the technology has failed to identify weapons or firearms, casting doubt on its accuracy.
The discussion also includes feasibility, affordability, and privacy issues. Some people wonder if more affordable and dependable traditional security measures, like metal detectors and bag scanners, would be a better option because AI systems can be costly to install.

Even while AI technology has the potential to improve school security, incidents like those in Atlanta and Utica highlight the need for thorough testing and cautious application.
