Sky Mavis Unveils Ambitious Plans to Revitalize Axie Infinity in 2023

Developer Sky Mavis of Axie Infinity is preparing for a pivotal year in 2023, driven by an “even more aggressive” strategy for its ecosystem. Aleksander Leonard Larsen, a co-founder of Sky Mavis, disclosed this strategic change at a recent Bloomberg panel discussion.

The Incredible Journey of Axie Infinity

2018 saw the launch of Axie Infinity, a blockchain-based game that can be played on PC and mobile devices. But when it crossed one million daily active users in 2021, it became well-known and successful. In this crucial year, the majority of players (67 percent) used Android to play the game, even though it could only be downloaded via a side-loaded APK file, avoiding the Google Play Store.

Axie Infinity is steadfast in adhering to its fundamental principle of being a play-to-earn game, even in the face of a significant drop in its market price. To advance the ecosystem, co-founder Aleksander Leonard Larsen underlined the necessity of creative experimentation and the addition of new coins.

Play-to-Earn: A Contentious Framework

Despite Axie Infinity’s enormous success, there is an ongoing discussion about whether the play-to-earn concept can be sustained. In a new analysis, Newzoo examines the development and prospects of the play-to-earn paradigm, speculating that it would not be viable outside of a metaverse. According to the paper, there is a chance that an in-game economy would eventually run into problems that could cause it to collapse.

In the NFT space, Axie Infinity has advanced significantly; by October 2021, over $2 billion worth of Axie Infinity NFTs have been traded. With a $3 billion total valuation, the game is a potent illustration of how play-to-earn in the gaming business is changing.

The gaming and blockchain communities are still divided on the future of play-to-earn games like Axie Infinity, even as Sky Mavis gets ready to set out on its audacious quest to bring the game back to life in 2023.
